Sotheby's Belgravia was set up by Marcus Linell, who joined Sotheby's in 1956, and was made director at the age of twenty-six just before leaving for New York to take charge of the works-of-art department at the recently purchased Parke Bernet. Marcus Linell also brought about changes in the style and design catalogues.

It is already difficult a mere decade later to see what a bold move it was to set up Belgravia as we know it. The conception right from the start was not to have a mere secondary auction room with a rapid turnover in lesser quality good, but an outlet for the best things from the later, largely uncharted fields of collectable material. The intention was to set a standard of stylishness and quality that would generate its own demand.
