Single Owner Auction Catalogues

"There is nothing more driven than a collector in heat."
---said about Napoleon after his long term acquisition tour of Europe′s greatest museums

It is not the object, prized as it may be, sitting sedately on a lighted glass shelf of a French 18th century vitrine.

It is the pursuit of that object. After all, taken all together, it is just another piece of Faberge like the one resting inches away... on either side... and in front of it... and behind it.

A collection, formed over time in sales rooms and dealers' back rooms, is a nebulous cloud of swirling possessiveness. It is as intense an activity as weight lifting or rowing 2000 meters on a choppy lake.

It takes a shelf of books and a human guide or two to earn a black belt in early Meissen or late Ming or carousel horses.

That is the pursuit!

A collector is formed by the pursuit of raising a finger, flashing a numbered paddle, tweaking an earlobe, or lifting an eyebrow.

And then the successful bidder puts pen to paper and signs her John Hancock.

On being a single owner:
(Purportedly quipped by William Randolph Hearst)

"I never bought a castle I didn′t like... to take apart."
